How much air pressure should we inflate our tires with for a certain trip?
To this question, I can’t give you a certain answer. You might even not want to do it like that, because of reasons. There are many factors influencing tire inflation like:
- Vehicle weight (and distribution)
- Tire construction (air pressure range limits)
- Tire width
- Tire diameter
- Vehicle speed
Furthermore, tire pressure changes with temperature, so you might have to check it before every ride. A compression test of the inner tube also reveals how much air pressure your tire can take. Some report that putting in some more air (2-5 psi) than usual helps to avoid flat tires while riding on sharp objects, but that’s up to you.

Few recommendations:
- Tire pressure should be as high as possible (within the limits of tire construction). If it is too low, your vehicle might lose its grip and drive uncontrollably. However don’t inflate it too much either, or you can damage the tire by over pressing it onto the rim.
- If you inflate your tires too high, they might burst while driving on the road at a higher speed (e.g. due to a tire blowout). In this case, your vehicle will lose its grip and drive uncontrollably in the direction of the deflated front/rear wheel.
- Inflating your tires too low helps to avoid punctures, but if you drive on sharp objects (like rock, wood sticks), the tire might get flat and losing its air pressure. If this happens while driving in deep sand or snow, the vehicle might lose its grip and drive uncontrollably in the direction of the deflated front/rear wheel.
- It is important to check your tire pressure before going out because it changes with the weather and time of day/year. On a cold evening on a new planet, I inflated my tires from 2 psi to 5 psi (and saved my life). Something similar happened during an unexpected desert sandstorm of Sweden – but that’s another story.
- The main goal is to inflate the tires so much that you can drive on sharp objects without puncturing them, but doing it too high might be dangerous for highway driving and also makes less grip in sand/snow/mud/grass. Anyway, a little later I will introduce a tire inflation calculator, where you can choose from a list of tires to get the optimal inflation value.
- Check your tire pressure before going out! Then follow the given guidelines and you won’t have any problems with too much or too little air in the tires.
